The Basics of Grass for Adult and Senior Cats

Why we suggest barley for grown-up cats, how to make grass part of an older cat's day, and when to check with your vet first.

The Basics of Grass for Adult and Senior Cats - Sprouties
Quick answer

Yes, adult and senior cats can enjoy fresh grass. We suggest barley: harvested young, with broad leaves, for cats who nibble at their own pace. Keep the box within easy reach and out of direct sun, and ask your vet first if your cat has a health condition or a prescribed diet.

Did you know cats of every age can enjoy fresh grass? Kittens can start once they are eating solid food, and adult and senior cats can keep nibbling for years. Of our three grasses, barley is the one we suggest for grown-up cats who like to take things at their own speed.

Here are the basics: what makes barley different, how to make grass part of an older cat's day, and when to check with your vet first.

Our barley at a glance: harvested young, with broad leaves, for nibbling at your cat's own pace.

1. Harvested Young Barley is harvested young, when its leaves hold the most natural antioxidants. It naturally contains vitamins C and E and carotenoids. Like every Sprouties grass, it is organic, grown hydroponically in the UAE, pesticide-free and non-GMO.

2. Broad Leaves Barley has broad leaves with more in every bite. That suits adult and senior cats who nibble at their own pace: a few bites now, a few more later, and no rush at all.

3. Helps with Hairballs All three of our grasses help with hairballs, barley included. Regular brushing and fresh water help too.

4. Fresh Every Time We harvest each box the morning it is delivered, and it reaches you the same day between 12 PM and 10 PM, fresh and chilled. A box stays good for about 7 days from harvest, so a plan keeps fresh grass arriving on a regular schedule.

When to Check with Your Vet First

  • Your cat has allergies
  • Your cat has a health condition
  • Your cat eats a diet prescribed by the vet
  • Vomiting keeps coming back
  • Trouble swallowing, or a sore mouth
  • Straining in the litter box

How to Build a Grass Routine

Routine is something plenty of cats appreciate, and an older cat is no exception. A few simple steps make grass an easy part of the day:

Three simple ways to make the box part of an older cat's day.
  • Put the box within easy reach, in a calm spot your cat already likes, so there are no big jumps or long trips involved.
  • Keep the box out of direct sun. In the UAE summer, the fridge works well.
  • Add a little water at the base of the box, never on the grass, starting two days after it arrives.

Pace: The Key to Enjoying Grass

Let your cat nibble at their own pace. There is no set amount, and no research has established one. If they eat a lot at once and bring it back up often, offer the box for 10 to 15 minutes at a time instead.

Why Barley Suits Adult and Senior Cats

Broad leaves with more in every bite, for adult and senior cats who nibble at their own pace. Harvested young, when its leaves hold the most natural antioxidants. A calm, unhurried sort of grass for a calm, unhurried sort of cat.

That said, every cat is different. Your older cat may prefer wheat or oat instead, and that is fine too. All three help with hairballs.

1. Start with One Box Order a single box or start a plan. Set it down in your cat's favorite spot and let them find it. There is no need to guide them to it.

2. Give It Time Some cats take a while with anything new. Keep the box fresh and available, and let your cat come back to it in their own time.

3. Try Short Sessions If your cat eats a lot at once and brings it back up often, offer the box for 10 to 15 minutes at a time instead, then keep it out of direct sun until next time.

4. Try Another Grass Cats can be particular. If barley isn't a hit, try wheat or oat. You can change grass any time from your account.

Remember, a new grass can take time. If your cat doesn't take to it straight away, don't be discouraged. Subscribers whose cat doesn't take to a grass get another grass to try under the Happy Cats Guarantee, and can have their money back if that one isn't for them either. Keeping an Eye on Things

Whenever you add something new to your cat's day, watch for changes in their habits or behavior. If your cat seems unwell, or brings grass back up often, talk to your vet.

Alongside grass, fresh water, cozy resting spots and gentle play all help an older cat feel at home.

Regular Vet Visits: Still the Main Event

You know your cat better than anyone, and regular visits with your vet matter more as cats get older. Grass is a small, pleasant extra, never a replacement for veterinary care, and it does not treat or manage any condition. If your cat has a health condition, ask your vet before adding anything new, grass included.

About Sprouties: How It Started Sprouties was started by Ammar Bardesi. About ten years ago, his cat KAT had a UTI, and a vet recommended adding fresh cat grass to her routine. He started growing it at home. KAT got better and kept coming back to the grass, so he kept growing it, and soon friends and family were asking for some.

Finding fresh, ready-to-enjoy cat grass in the UAE was hard: DIY kits took over a week and results were hit or miss, and pet store options were inconsistent. So he started Sprouties. We'd never say the grass made KAT better. Your vet is always the first call, as KAT's was.
